Gina Young

Do you remember the first time you saw a crayon and realized it was a magic wand? Gina does. She was three years old.

The moment she saw all those gorgeous colors resting in their box was the beginning of her life long desire to create beautiful images.

Gina’s view of the world is different from most people. Due to an eye condition called Rotary Nystagmus, her eyes move non-stop in a circular motion. Despite this (or maybe because of it), as a child, she dreamed of creating beautiful works of art and spent many hours studying and drawing subjects that she enjoyed looking at – maybe with the hope of creating something that would stay still, literally longing to create “Still Life”.

Possibly due to the nystagmus, she also never developed binocular vision – meaning she is “stereo-blind” and has no depth perception. In order to perceive how close or far away an object is, she became hyper-aware of angles, shadows, lights, darks, shapes and sizes. Focusing on objects through eyes in perpetual motion and constantly being on the look-out for visual clues in order to gauge distances can be exhausting – so it seems only natural that she would feel compelled to translate the world into a still picture.

She studied Commercial Art her first year of college. But found it rigid and unappealing, and due to her eye condition struggled with this precise graphic form of art. She turned away from art for many years, instead she channeled her creativity into designing and teaching custom data base software.

Many years later, after visiting with a dear friend, who had recently returned to a career in art, she was once again inspired to pursue her artistic dream. Instead of crayons, she discovered oil paint and it was love at first sight.

Always drawn to beautiful objects, their reflections and colors, she enjoys capturing them in various forms of “Still Life” and spends hours each day in her studio or wandering the beautiful gardens that surround her country retreat, looking for inspiration.
