Rachel Kort

Showroom

Rachel Kort is a native of Kansas City. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1998 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. Presently, she is working as a full-time graphic designer. She enjoys painting on large canvases using intense colors and various media. Some of her influences are Willem de Kooning, Hans Hoffman, tag artists, design, and nature.

For Kort, painting is about the experience and the process of applying different mediums to the canvas. She rarely uses a paintbrush. She enjoys using palette knives and scrapers of all sizes, objects that one may not typically use to paint. Kort also mixes the paint right on the canvas.

She is not afraid to experiment. She says:

“When I start a painting, I do not know what direction it will go in or how it will end up. I typically let the medium direct me. I love to layer the various mediums on top of each other to create a sense of depth. Some of the mediums I choose to use are hard to control, which allows me to be freer with my art. I love the organic lines or shapes I can get with the enamel when I pour it straight from the can onto the canvas. Color and texture are a big part of my artwork, and it helps me create a visual playground for the viewer to get lost in.”
