Energetic impressionistic realism and celebration of the ordinary are a few words that best describe my work. I strive for accurate drawing and proportions of the figure or subject, and sensitive representation of light in my interpretation. I attempt to illustrate my objectives with value, brush stroke and color while keeping the work fresh and simple.
Inspiration/influence: The nuances of human form; moving, working, living… I am captivated by the grace of a gesture and the beauty and emotion of an expression. Life is a collection of moments. In my work as a landscape architect, my objective was always about creating physical space for living. The attention to people in my design background has created, I believe, the desire to capture the moments of life in my paintings.
Growing up in a very “modest” and practical household climate, encouragement to pursue painting and drawing was minimal. Acclaim for my work in middle and high school art projects encouraged me to pursue an applied design curriculum in college. I earned a degree in Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University and this became my life work for 30 years. Along the way, I studied painting and drawing as elective study at LSU and at miscellaneous art schools.
About 10-12 years ago I decided to devote the majority of my time to fine art and began instruction workshops with artists I admired, classes at a local art school and I have been painting full time since then. I began with soft pastel (dry pigment) and achieved some success participating in art events across the county, receiving honors in the figurative and still life categories in the Pastel Journal National Competition 2003, The Mary Louise Womer Award of Excellence at 57th Street Art Fair in Chicago, 2005, from the Pastel Society of America “The Figure in Pastel, A Tribute to Flora Giffuni,” @The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH in 2007, and many art festival awards.
I started to work in oil a couple of years ago and am currently devoting all my painting time to this pursuit.
Jan currently is working in oil at her studio in central Florida. Her paintings are exhibited throughout the year at leading art festivals across the country and in select galleries

Diane Salamon is a nationally recognized artist whose work is included in many collections including the Official State Art Collection of Oklahoma. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States in juried and invitational exhibits and is included in the registry of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She has been awarded signature status in the Oklahoma Watercolor Society and the Southwest Watercolor Society. Diane is frequently interviewed about issues concerning art and requested to jury exhibits.
Diane’s work is about bringing balance, beauty and hope to an often chaotic and unorganized world.
Her paintings consist of layers of color, patterns, shapes and written prayers which combined together result in a musical quality within the composition. She finishes each piece with several layers of varnish which emphasizes the depth of the layers of paint and also protects the painting.
Diane was born in Mankato, Minnesota and moved many times during her childhood. As a young adult she made Tulsa, Oklahoma her home. In addition to painting she enjoys playing piano, reading, traveling, and writing about art.

Born in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1972, into a family deeply steeped in the arts, Maria Luisa Johnson, known professionally as Majo, developed her natural talent in a small informal studio setting where she absorbed the acute attention to form, color and texture associated with Latin American culture, and with a passion for story telling.
She was deeply influenced of visionaries from her country such as Alejandro Obregon and Fernando Botero.
Deeply affected by both the beauty and the chaos of her country , and torn by its violence, Majo ultimately expresses her work as a discovery of the best in nature and humanity.
Majo lived and studied Fashion and Interior Design in Bogota and Toronto before moving to the United States in 1995. Her work can be found in myriad private homes and exhibits, including Naples, Washington DC, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Kansas City. Additionally her paintings hang in private collections abroad in England and Sweden.
Her work can be seen in the collections of: Brotherhood Bank & Trust, Kansas City KS; Data Source, Kansas City MO; The Shadow Buddies Foundation, Lenexa KS; AOS Alexander Open Systems, Overland Park KS; Catlett Fire Station, Catlett VA; The Kansas City Symphony Office building, Kansas City MO. In 2010, Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills Kansas commissioned the artist to do painting of their new Club House building.

Richard Schmid was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1934 where he received his education. He was influenced by his grandfather, Julian Oates, an Architectural Sculptor, and began drawing, and anatomy began at the age of twelve and at fourteen, he studied under landscape painter Gianni Cilfone, who helped him refine his painting skills and introduced him to color theory.
A milestone in Schmid’s development came in 1952 when he entrolled at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. There he learned the classical techniques of the early Dutch, Flemish, and Spanish masters from William H. Mosby, who had studied at the Royal Academy in the 1920’s and later at the Superior Institute in Antwerp. Mosby was a technical expert on European and American realism and taught Schmid everything he knew about the late nineteenth century Italian, French, Slavic, Scandinavian, and American Painters. The emphasis in all periods was on Alla Prima or Direct Painting systems of the time. Fidelity to perception of the subject at the moment of painting was set as the goal of Direct Painting. Extreme accuracy and speed were developed and Schmid’s individual style and techniques emerged as a consequence.
Developed over many years, Schmid’s current methods can be identified technically by a characteristic precision of draftsmanship and lavish color. The content of his painting derives mainly from his personal experiences and convictions. He views painting as a unique form of language. Very early in his career, Schmid rejected abstraction as an ineffective method of communication. He chose instead the symbolism inherent in realism to convey his ideas. Schmid draws upon his interest in music, history, philosophy, teaching, traveling, and personal relationships for his subject matter.
After military service, Schmid moved to New York in 1958 where he painted and exhibited for two years before moving his studio to western Connecticut. There he married, and settled down to raise a family, and pursue his creative ideas. During this time he traveled and painted extensively throughout the United States, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Europe.
Then, after a seve year reunion with his hometown of Chicago, Schmid moved to Colorado in 1991. He currently resides in Southern Vermont with his wife the talented painted, Nancy Guzik. Schmid says the peaceful setting affords him the opportunity to paint still lifes, landscapes, and figures exclusively from life. In his painting and teaching, Schmid has championed the idea of working directly from nature using techniques that allow the artist to capture both the color and the detail of a subject in one sitting.
During his distinguished career, Schmid has influenced thousands of artists by his writing, teaching, and artwork. He has long been recognized as a master of direct alla prima painting. He is the author of two previous books published by Watson Guptill in 1971 and 1973.
Both books became best sellers as well as standard textbooks in the United States. His first volume on landscape, painting, was summarized in an August 1971 article in American Artist magazine, and his 1973 book on painting the nude, sold 250,000 copies in China. Unfortunately, this book was reproduced without his permission.
His latest volume entitled, ALLA PRIMA- Everything I Know About Painting, was first published in 1998 by Stove Prairie PressTM. The third printing and newly revised edition was published in November of 1999. Alla Prima has been sold to artists in 33 countries throughout the world as well as to painters, collectors, libraries, and museums in America.
Since 1958 Richard Schmid has won nearly every major art award in the United States, including the John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement from the American Society of Portrait Artists Foundation and the American Watercolor gold medal. In 1987, he was honored with the $100,000 National Arts in the Parks award for his oil painting, “Rocky Mountain National Park – Mountain Stream”. The painting is featured on the first official 1988 National Park Stamp. In recent years, Schmid has conducted an on-going series of lecture demonstrations and has established art scholarships from the proceeds.
Richard Schmid has had fifty one person shows including a major retrospective at the Thomas Gilcrease Museum of Art. His works have been acquired by important private and museum collections nationwide and his work has been a part of group exhibitions in the United States and China.

The works of british artist Mark Briscoe are a culmination of years of experience working in a variety of artistic expressions. The gracefully flowing lines that run through his compositions are inspired from his knowledge of Indian miniature painting that he learned while studying under the master artist Ram Krishna Sharma in India. His experience in antique restoration and the painting techniques used by the old masters has paved way to a wonderful method that combines the old master’s classic technique and color palette with a little folk feeling and modern expressionism, though his pieces defy easy categorization. The richly textured paint finish has a mild patina that is as delightful to look at close up as it is to look at from a distance.
His works have been bought by art collectors such as Lord Swraj Paul, Ramola Bachchan and Rajesh Shah (of Mukund steel) but only since he started exhibiting with galleries in the USA has his work begun to attract attention from a much broader audience, his current style of composition has had an instant appeal with US collectors.
His work has been featured in several magazines including Architectural Digest, House and Garden, the front cover of Resurgence magazine and India Today. Mark Briscoe currently lives and works in north eastern Spain with his wife Sandhya and their two children.
“The main object I set out to achieve is to create a painting that is esthetically pleasing and elevating. It should have an instant impact on the viewer. In many of my paintings I use a fairly bold quivering line that reminds us of the works of Van Gogh although my technique is fundamentally different to his. I use light glazes in oil that produce tonal depth and a mellow richness which gives emphasis to the impasto brush strokes, thus imparting an appearance of movement and animation.”

Born and raised in Kansas City, Annalisa was exposed to the arts at an early age. She participated in classes at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art as soon as she could hold a paintbrush. Annalisa took a nomadic approach to her higher education, following her belief that learning is a product of environment not solely a reflection of institution. She chased her imagination through five universities and art institutes, beginning in California and ending in Washington State in 2008. When her Bachelor of Arts was awarded in Psychology and Studio Art from Antioch University, she had accumulated a diverse breadth of experience in disciplines of painting, illustration, photography, and psychology.
Annalisa’s work is often described as being alive. Her abstract paintings are emotional landscapes that resonate on multiple levels. Her use of color, which is often paired with gold pigments and light reflective paints, emit translucence and warmth.
Annalisa states, “I sense in my art a sort of spirit and energy that is indeed a part of me but also a part of something bigger. To some onlookers it may seem like just strokes of color, to others it may feel like something much more. To me, the images breathe and when I listen inwardly they whisper truths.”

My work is a cumulative process made of my life experiences and my desire to sculpt the human form. I can see om each of my pieces the evolution of learning and the discovery that takes place when I develop the soul and likeness of my subject.
The finished piece hopefully reveals my thoughtful study of the subject and the energy of the creative process.

Award-winning sculptor/painter, Delmar Pettigrew’s works can be found in collections as far away as Kuwait, and as close as municipalities in Wyoming. Pettigrew has studied with numerous nationally known wildlife artists such as, Walter Matia, Chapel, and Floyd Tennyson Dewitt. Painting workshops include, Peggy Kroll Roberts, Kim English, Michelle Torrez, Dan Mieduch, Dan Robinson, and Ken Backhaus. He also credits his wife of 30 years, acclaimed sculptor Martha Pettigrew, for her insightful critiques.
Recently, his work was accepted in the prestigious, Art of the Animal Kingdom X, held
each year at the Bennington Center for the Arts, Bennington, Vermont; Kentucky Wildlife Exhibition, Henderson, Kentucky; Audubon Wildlife Exhibition, Museum of Nebraska Art, Kearney, Nebraska; and two-person residency at the Plains Museum, Center for the Studies of the Great Plains in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Pettigrew describes his work as “rendered impressionistically.” His bronzes, mostly wildlife, equine, and recently sporting dogs, are created without non-essential detail. “I don’t want to insult the intelligence of my viewers by painstakingly drawing every hair.”

Cally Krallman was raised on a farm on the High Plains of northwest Kansas near Goodland. She attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where she received her BFA in 1981. She worked in commercial art until 1992.
She has studied with Phil Starke, Kim English, Michael Albrechtson, and William Scott Jennings. She has been featured in many one-person exhibits and her work is collected throughout the U.S. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists and has exhibited in the Salon International. She was also a guest artist in the “Art in the Embassies” program in Tblisi, Georgia.
“I have been painting in the Midwest, primarily Kansas for about 20 years,” says Krallman. “I have traveled many places but I am still drawn to the simplistic beauty of the plains. Many people think of the Midwest as just a flat agricultural state, but in fact it is full of wonderful rolling hills, tree-lined rivers and creeks, and other unique land formations.
“The sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking and calming at the same time. Our four seasons create a myriad of colors worthy of any artists’ palette.
“Any artist can see the grandeur of the great mountains and oceans, but to find beauty in the simplest of rocky plains, tall native grasses, back roads, meandering creeks, fields of grain, takes someone who loves the region… loves the plains.
“Regional art plays an important role in American history. I feel it not only records our place in time, but it is a window for others to see the ordinary in a not so ordinary way. I try to share that in each painting I create.”
Krallman enjoys painting outdoors (en plein aire) because it allows her to capture the surroundings and atmosphere that can be difficult to achieve in the studio.

Henry W. Dixon grew up in Chicago, Illinois, with his mother, an older brother and three sisters. While attending elementary school there, he occasionally got into trouble for drawing in class when he should have been finishing his class assignments.
At the age of 18, he and the rest of the family moved to Niles, Michigan, where he graduated from high school and later attended Western Michigan University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in art and Master of Arts degree in graphic design.
After graduation, he was recruited by Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Missouri. He now resides in KC with his wife, Rena, and three sons: Rodney, Reginald and Ryan. He now works out of his studio, but Dixon has also taught drawing and graphic design at one of the local universities.
Dixon paints predominately in watercolor. His figures are mainly those of children and the elderly, whose actions and demeanor seem unpretentious and natural. He enjoys capturing his figures as they really are. His landscapes are those of rocky terrain, such as the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Arches National Park.
When mixed with a strong light source, his still lifes take on an abstract quality. Depicting light on his subjects is what evokes the most pleasure in him from his paintings.
In 1995, Dixon became a signature member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS). He was also selected as one of five artists to represent the United States in London, England, at St. James Palace for the Winsor and Newton World-Wide Millennium Painting Competition, “Our World in the Year 2000.” The exhibition was also shown in Stockholm, Sweden, and the United Nations Building in New York.
Afterward, Dixon was selected to represent the state of Missouri as the artist whose work was part of the White House Calendar for the year 2001. This work is now part of the permanent collection of the White House Museum.
Dixon is intrigued and awed by such masters as Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent (for their figures) and Thomas Moran (for his stunning landscapes). His major tool for capturing his subjects is one of his best friends – his camera.
In 2009, Dixon authored his first book, Paint Amazing Watercolors from Photographs. It is published by North Light Books, an imprint of F&W Media, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ohio artist Linda Langhorst’s images often include musicians and musical craftsman in casual and intimate settings. The focus of her work is not the individuals she paints, but rather the relationships between the individuals, their music making, and their environment.
Langhorst currently works primarily in oil. The artist treats her canvas as though it is a kind of tapestry. Bits and pieces of paint are woven together to create something that speaks of a real-life moment. Her goal is to let the paint tie the participants together in that place and at that moment.
In 2009, Langhorst moved part of her studio into The Guitar House Workshop, where she is now the shop’s artist-in-residence.
The old house is home to a lesson studio, fretted instrument shop, luthiers (custom guitar builders) and near-continuous jam sessions. She shares her day with musicians, songwriters, and fine woodworkers. It is a delightful immersion for an artist who paints people making music.
Langhorst’s drawings and paintings can be found in private, public and corporate collections across America and Canada. Her most recent commission project includes designing two 8-ft stone relief sculptures (sculpted by Will Galloway, Bloomington Indiana) and an extended series of paintings for The Ohio State University’s new Ohio Union building, scheduled to open early 2010.

Barbara Frets Simmons is a painter who is represented in more than 35 public collections and has been honored with large numbers of prestigious awards, including an MAAA/NEA Fellowship Award and first place in the American Artist magazine contest. Simmons holds a Master of Arts degree.
As in her paintings, her sculpture of figures and their gestural interpretations establish the basic truths of the figures and their environment. The viewer’s imagination fills in the rest. Suggestion is a powerful part in the reality that she creates in her art.

I paint because I like to paint. It is the easiest and most direct route of expressing feelings that I find difficult to verbalize. Many of my works are landscapes, still lives, or figures. But regardless of what the subject matter, I find that it is always the emotions that the image evokes in me that I am trying to capture. The shapes, textures, colors, lights, and shadows are the notes of melody and rhythm of a composition that exalts the senses and calms the soul. The subtleties of emotions can be felt, not described.
Born and raised in China, I studied in Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. Later I received a MFA degree from the Academy of Art College, San Francisco. Upon graduation, I moved to Kansas to pursue my career in painting and illustration.
I am a signature member of the Oil Painters of America and have won various awards from the Oil Painters of America Annual Exhibition and National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society Exhibit.

Roberto Tommasi was born in Verona, Italy where he currently lives. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Verona, and he is a member of the Fine Art Society in Verona and Firenze (Florence).
In his work he believes that all subjects – whether landscape, still-life, figurative or architectural – must be treated equally. A truly great landscape painting, then, is no less important than a portrait - because of how it is made.
There really is no hierarchy of subject-matter. This is why he says “it is not what you paint, it is how you paint it.” It has long been his belief that the most intelligent and successful artists draw from two sources of influence: history, and modernity. Thus he studies the Old Masters carefully and respectfully, while ever aware of the dangers of merely imitating the artistic ideals of a bygone era.

Born in Los Angeles, California, in 1941, Stephen Gosnell studied in Texas and New York. He received a master’s degree in 1969 from State University of New York at Buffalo.
Primarily a painter and printmaker, Gosnell exhibited widely in national and regional juried exhibitions in major museums. He also had solo and group shows in other venues such as colleges, private galleries, and community art centers.
For over 30 years, he taught art at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Since 2001, he has been professor emeritus of art at UMKC.
He has published a number of articles in such publications as Esquire, Texas Monthly, New Letters, Kansas City magazine and others.
Since retirement, he has retreated into professional seclusion as much as possible. He prefers to devote himself to making things for those whom he cherishes most, with no real intention of profiting from them or exhibiting them in public. His work is available through Eva Reynolds - a former student, or as he put it “She is one of those aforementioned cherished creatures I have great difficulty refusing anything.”

Born in Neosho, Missouri, Thomas Hart Benton is probably best known for his murals associated with the American Scene Painting movement of the 1930s. A leader of the Regionalism movement in American Art, his vivid style portrayed pre-industrial agrarian life.
In 1908, Benton went to Paris, France, to study art. He returned home to Missouri, but was sent off to New York where he struggled to find his artistic voice. Returning to Missouri in 1924 to care for his father, Benton discovered the “Americana” that would define his artistic style.
Through his work, Benton made observations about the plight of the poor, rural American.
His focus made a hero of the everyman. The rich and powerful were often vilified in his paintings.
His emphasis on the plight of the working class in the post-Depression era earned him a reputation as a social activist, and he gained publicity through public works projects.
In 1935, he returned to Missouri to take a teaching position at the Kansas City Art Institute. In Kansas City, he painted some of his most well-known works such as the Independence Murals and the Truman Library. He lived in Kansas City until his death in 1975.

Pam Peffer has had a life-long interest in art. Over the past 18 years, she has pursued it through fine arts studies at Johnson County Community College and workshop studies with Philomene Bennett, Phil Starke, Charles Stegner as well as other painters and ceramists.
Her love of color has found its way into low-fire ceramics, stone jewelry and paintings based on quick, “drive-by” views of scenery. She paints glimpses of the scenery passed on the way to somewhere else.
The oil paintings are memories and inventions of the patterns, color, joy and abundance to be found along the road. Pattern and color have been repeated in recent still life paintings.
Peffer was raised in Kansas City where she lives today. She received a B.S. in education from the University of Kansas. Her work is shown in the Kansas City area and can be found in corporate and private collections.

Formerly an illustrator, Martha Pettigrew has established herself as one of the foremost contemporary sculptors.
Her work has been accepted in such prestigious and exclusive exhibitions as: Annual Exhibition of the American Academy of Equine Artists, Museum of the Horse, Lexington, Kentucky; Settlers West’s “The Great American West Show,” Tucson, Arizona; Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s “Birds in Art”; and Loveland High Plains Art Council’s “Sculpture in the Park.”
A breeder and owner of Thoroughbred horses for more than 20 years, Pettigrew is completely at ease with the horse as a subject for her sculpture. About her work, she says:
“I find the horse an endless source of inspiration in my art. I find it challenging to capture the essence of the animal in a manner in which the viewer will feel the power, grace, and intelligence that has made the horse a favorite subject of artists since early man painted on cave walls. It is my hope that the sculpture will become a source of inspiration to those viewing it.”
Pettigrew and her husband, Delmar, have enjoyed attending major races such as the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders Cup Races. Their racing and breeding stock are kept in Kentucky, Florida, and California.
Her work is found in major collections including: Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, New York; J.P. Morgan Company, New York; Nebraska Racing Hall of Fame, Grand Island, Nebraska, Anheuser Busch distributors, Columbus, Ohio, and Grand Island, Nebraska; Hyatt Regency at Gainey Ranch, Scottsdale, Arizona; Hilton Hotel and Convention Center, Sedona, Arizona, and many others.
Jumeira Beach magazine, published in Dubai and circulated worldwide, featured Pettigrew’s equine works in a major article (Jumeira Beach, “Sculpted Forms of Martha Pettigrew,” July-August-September, 2001).

Kwan Wu ranks among the top sculptors in the world. His reputation was established very early, and it is fair to say that he was being groomed to become the state sculptor of China. A series of events brought him to the United States in 1988 and led to his U.S. citizenship in 1997.
Starting with nothing but determination, talent, and a dream, he has established himself among the top sculptors in the West. His quality is quickly recognized and covers work from heroic and monumental to miniature in a wide range of subjects.
He lives in the Kansas City area with his wife and three children and works from his studio in Overland Park, Kansas.
What sets Kwan apart is his ability to put “life” into his work, to capture the spirit and emotion in powerful ways. His is truly fine art at its best. His work offers a rare opportunity to participate in the rise of a world-class artist in his new country.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1937, Carol Gold grew up on a dairy farm in western Massachusetts.
Between 1956 and 1960, she studied art at Cornell University, and the museum school in Boston. Fourteen years later, her children old enough for her to return to sculpting full time, her work began develop in earnest.
Bronze casting techniques learned at the College of Martin in 1977-1978 enabled Gold to build and operate her own foundry. This intimacy with the entire casting process profoundly affected the evolution of her sculpture. She began to think in terms of the potential of the metal and started to use wax as her creative medium rather than the clay of her initials sculptures.
Simplicity is primary in her continuous search for forms with which to best express the essence of motion and mood. Through the textures and attitude of her figures and animals she strives to convey her feelings about nature and human character.
For the past 25 years, Gold’s work has been widely exhibited in the U.S. and Canada. Among her numerous awards are those received from the National Sculpture Society and the North American Sculpture Exhibition. Public commissions include sculptures for the city of Bakersfield, California, and for the campus of Southwest Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Hellen Wendlandt tries to convey the beauty of the land in her paintings.
“I am greatly influenced by the quality of the light falling upon the scene,” she says. “This varies over a wide range depending on such factors as time of day, the weather and season of the year.”
“Sometimes I paint on site (plein aire) and finish in the studio. Most of my painting is done from photographs I’ve taken.”

Chun Wang was born in Nanjing, China, and completed his formal studies in China.
He emigrated to the U.S. in 1992. He continued to study painting and earned an MFA at the University of Missouri. Later, he pursued a career in painting and illustration full-time.
He especially loves to paint from real life.
The liveliness and the energy of his surroundings, the sky, the people, the landscape, the street scenes, and their magical and endless changes move him. He seeks to represent these subjects poetically, with emotion.
He has participated in many shows, including the Oil Painters of America annual exhibition. Several of his paintings are collected publicly and privately.

Miryam was born in Poland (near Krakow), where she spent her childhood.
She graduated from Krakow Business and Marketing College (her thesis focused on the influence of advertising on the human psyche). She continued her education on Jagiellonian University in Krakow in the Management and Interpersonal Communication Department.
Even though she doesn’t have a formal fine arts background, art was her deep passion through whole her life. Art expresses her sensitive nature and creative outlook on the world.
Thorough everyday observation she tries to analyze people. People are always the subject of her work. Their mysterious personalities, involved characters, unconventional and inexplicable behaviors – which are secretive for us and mystify many – are her inspiration. They intrigue her and help her to find her place in the world.
„Art doesn’t have any reason
It’s a reason in itself…
It’s an absolute…
Because it’s a reflection of absolute-
of the soul…”
S. Przybyszewski

Mark English refuses to be bored. An artist of exceptional gifts, he had achieved one remarkable success after another. Driven by a need for excellence and an unending attraction to challenge and change, he has created an unparalleled body of work.
English was born in Hubbard, Texas, in 1933. His first job was picking cotton, but he worked his way out of the fields when he learned how to paint signs for visiting rodeos. He attended the University of Texas and graduated from The Art Center College in Los Angeles in 1960.
English moved to Connecticut in 1964, and so began his meteoric rise as one of America’s top magazine illustrators. His first editorial assignment from The Saturday Evening Post led to nonstop work from most major publications including Reader’s Digest, The Ladies’ Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Sports Illustrated, Redbook, McCall’s, and Time.
The recipient of over a hundred awards from arts organizations nationwide, English was named “Artist of the Year” by the Artists Guild of New York in 1967. His work was selected with astounding regularity for the Society of Illustrators annual exhibitions. The Society further honored him with the Hamilton King Award in 1967, and in 1983 elected him to the their prestigious Illustrators Hall of Fame.
In 1977, an offer from Hallmark Cards to serve as artist-in-residence prompted a move to Kansas City, Missouri.
In 1996, English began to concentrate on gallery paintings almost exclusively and soon found great success in this new venture. His works are coveted by art lovers and private collectors, and have been shown in Canada, Japan, and throughout the United States, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
Increasingly, English’s interest in Kansas City and its surrounding countryside began to predominate his paintings. English creates rich patterns using simplified geometric shapes and abstract planes that echo the topography and coloration of the land. His landscapes evoke remembered scenes and associative feeling rather than represent particular locations – it is the essence of the experience, gleaned from his continual observation.
As an artist, English is committed to innovation and growth. His career as an illustrator set new standards within the field, and his recent paintings are proof of his determination, drive and desire to further challenge himself.

Conci Denniston has been painting musicians at work for a decade. They go through contorted motions to make music. For Denniston, they are good subjects for the study of emotion.
“Objects in motion, I suppose, would be more appropriately rendered by a film artist. But after I saw Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, I realized that a figure in a painting can appear to move. In a sense Duchamp gave me permission to pursue the concept of motion in painting,” says Denniston.
“That motion is different from what you would see in a fast-film photo of a galloping horse. The horse in the photo would not appear to move. It would be caught forever static in a galloping position.
“I’m attempting to render a certain amount of motion in my paintings. Of course, that is only one of the challenges I deal with in painting.”

Donna Carrington has been painting professionally since the 1960s. She writes:
“I am greatly influenced by the French Impressionists and their use of color. I use oil, acrylic and pastel, sometimes using the acrylic as an under-painting and applying oil over it. The smaller of my works are done alla prima and finished in one session. The larger paintings usually take several trips out to the site to complete.
“In 1979, I enrolled in a landscape painting class at the University of Kansas. It was then that my style of painting began to change drastically. I loved painting on location and found I was greatly inspired in the midst of the landscape. Nature has a beautiful variety of muted and subtle color harmonies that work perfectly together.
“My large paintings are done in oil. I feel less
confined when using a larger canvas. I am attracted to the rolling vistas of Kansas and the wide-open skies. I also love the colorful meadows and grasses that are so prevalent on the farms and prairies nearby.
“I would describe my painting style as somewhat impressionistic leaning more toward realism in the past year. I have been striving toward conveying a mood and emotion in my work. I paint on location whenever possible; believing that being out there, being part of the landscape, and feeling the moment enables me to capture the essence that made me stop and look in the first place.
“If I am able to relay to those who view my paintings how I feel and share the beauty I see in God’s handiwork, I will have succeeded in my goal as an artist.”

The paintings of Mary Frances Ballard are her personal visions of gardens.
“I want to share all the feelings one has when taking a path and experiencing the quietness, the coolness of shade, the warmth of sunshine and the wonderful colors of nature. I consider my visual language to be a landscape,” says Ballard.
“Some of my gardens are local and others are of
places I have traveled with my camera. I seek out botanical gardens. I like the formality of some of them and I am always looking for different combinations of plants and compositions.”
She most enjoys painting on canvas and likes the large size because she would like the viewers to feel they can walk in and feel refreshed.

Born in Illinois, Babe Atha has lived in Kansas City all of her adult years. Her art history major was completed at the University Of Arizona, after attending the University of Kansas.
Atha has studied at the Kansas City Art Institute with Frank Szasz, Mary Howell, Philomene Bennett and Lou Marak. She worked with Vladan Stiha in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Sergiei Bongari in Rexburg, Idaho.
She uses acrylic paint on canvas as the medium for her paintings. Her impressionistic style and informal, spontaneous elements result in a strong sense of life and movement. Her treatment of color moves from deep, rich tones of the Southwest to fresh floral reminiscent of a country garden.
She expresses clarity and dignity in the beauty of simplicity.
“I enjoy the power and excitement of the brush, the way the paint moves on the canvas to create form of essence of flower. Simplicity over confusion.”
Atha’s works are displayed in many residence and corporations all over the United States and Canada.
In Kansas City, her work was commissioned by St. Luke’s Hospital, Menorah Hospital, Shadow Glen, Indian Hills Golf Clubs, Garrozzo’s Inc., Trumpets restaurant in Leawood and many others.

Tom Corbin’s sculptures extol the human condition, most often through the female form – her mood, grace and vitality. His furniture designs combine sculpturally driven organic forms with the functional sensibilities of architecture.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1954, Corbin’s early fascination in art was inspired by his mother, an art teacher by trade. Despite studying painting and drawing at Miami University, his original career pursuit was in business as an advertising executive. He was well on his way to a successful career in advertising when a chance meeting with a bronze sculptor encouraged him to take a sculpting class. There, the hook was set.
By 1986, Corbin put away his suit and tie for good in lieu of life as a sculptor. Through his persistence and good fortune, he was awarded a series of commissions that gave him the exposure and income to pursue his dream.
Today, Corbin and his staff can be found working in his Kansas City studio on a host of compelling projects – from a 20’ monument destined for Washington, D.C., to a massive custom coffee table for a collector in New York. During an average year, he will produce over 20 new sculpture and furniture designs to satisfy the demand from his galleries and showrooms.

Donna Aldridge is an international award-winning painter with works in galleries and private and corporate collections in 25 countries.
Aldridge is well known for her broad, spacious landscapes and luscious still lifes, and continues to enjoy painting the figure and portrait. She is fluent in a broad range of mediums, though in recent years she has focused primarily in pastels and oils.
Color – in fascinating relationships – excites her most, played out on foundations of elegantly engineered compositions with dynamic movement and balances, leading the viewer on a journey through each piece. Additional hallmarks of Aldridge’s award-winning paintings include a strong sense of light and shadow, of atmosphere as well as richly applied pigment.
Aldridge’s 37”-wide oil painting was awarded Best of Show at the Third Annual Plein Air Event in
June 2003 in Kansas City. (She also took second place in 2002 and Best of Show in 2001 for the Body of Work.)
Other recent show awards include Pastel Painters of Cape Cod For Pastels Only on Cape Cod Annual National Exhibition the last two years; Southeastern Pastel Society 2002 10th International Show at Quinlan Visual Arts Center; Boulder Art Association 11th National Juried Exhibition & Sale 2002, First Place; Pastel Society of the West Coast 16th Annual International Open Exhibition; Pastel Society of New Mexico National Pastel Painting Exhibition; Connecticut Pastel Society Renaissance in Pastel National Exhibition and Pastel Painters of Ontario Sixth Annual Art International Exhibition.
Earlier awards include the Silver Medal of Honor for Pastel, Knickerbocker Artists Grand National Annual Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club, New York.

Dayann Arce Rodriguez is a private painter who has sold his artwork to private collections in Spain, Austria and the United States. He currently lives in Havana, Cuba.
Having graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts “San Alejandro” in Havana in 2002, Rodriguez has participated in numerous exhibitions.
“My work can be framed within the experimental camp, sometimes realist and sometimes expressive informal or conceptual – all depending in the moment and feelings at the time,” says Rodriguez.
“It is never my intention to frame myself within a particular style if this becomes a creative limitation.
My work at this moment of my life could be defined as surrealist art where the neo-idealist is mixed with graphic elements and expressive resources coming from abstract expressions percolating from the paint-dripping base of the painting. Other times this same base brings my intention to cut and bring out the figure that always occupies the front plane of the painting. This figure’s principal objective is to reflect the innocence of a dream world that functions as an oasis within larger conflicts – and the challenges and problems that our society lives. A space where our mind flies over – a space virgin of malice – within healthy and apparently ingenuous surroundings, through which I pretend to bring out reflections about the values worth saving within the soul of humanity.”
